We first worked with Richie in 2019. It was apparent then that he was someone who seriously loved shooting!
He then came back in 2021 for alterations on his jacket. We had just been through some of the biggest upheavals imaginable for a small business and a family, As always we did our utmost to advise him best and explained our processes and then explained that things would be different as now everything was different.
He ended up helping us out.
He didn't help because he pitied us, or because we asked him to, but because, as we later found out, that was him being his most authentic self.
A quick scroll down his facebook wall and you’d be forgiven for assuming that he was a coach first and a shooter second, when in fact the opposite was true. The time and effort he put into other people’s shooting journey, be it fellow athletes or people who haven't even realised that they love shooting yet, was incredible. Everywhere we go we hear more stories of Richie helping out in amazing ways and we hear of how his influence still helps people today.
Richie was not involved with the target shooting world for all that long really, which makes his impact all the more remarkable.
When he knew his prognosis, we were in communication with him and suggested the idea of an award. We wanted to be able to commemorate his commitment to the shooting world and also to inspire others to continue his legacy of ‘just helping out’ - as he saw it. He loved the idea, and together we decided that a trophy holding a dedicated spare tin of pellets would be a great way to represent always looking out for others on the range.
We want to use this award to recognise clubs and organisations that go above and beyond for their shooters, and going forward will work with the NSRA to facilitate this.
About the trophies
During the consultations with Richie, we proposed a wooden turned replica pellet large enough to hold a tin of pellets. Mark turned several prototypes and we settled on the final design.
The final result is 1 large Oak trophy based on the shape of a pellet with a removable top and cavity for a tin of RWS (Richie’s favoured) pellets and 2 smaller trophies one from Cherry for the first recipient and one from Sapele to be given to Richie’s family, still based on the form of a pellet. All 3 have engraved plates on the top and smaller plates engraved with a qr code that leads to this page.
Richie never saw the final pieces, but we really hope that he would have liked it.
If anyone has any stories about being helped by Richie that they would like us to share on this award page, please get in touch.
